Alaverdi Monastery Cellar is the brand winery of Alaverdi Monastery. This is the historic center of the spiritual culture and of wine-making in Georgia. Wine has been made here since the 11 century. The vineyards are located around the monastery at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains in the Alazani Valley (Kakheti). Alaverdi Wines are unique – they are made by the oenologist of the monastery, Dr. Teimuraz Glonti.
The wine is kept and ages in special clay jugs, called kvevri. According to the ancient Georgian tradition the fermentation of the grapes ocurs in these earthen vessels, and the grapes are put in together with the skins, seeds, pulp, and even the bunchstems. These wines are very different from the wines produced by the European technology. The Kakheti production method produces rounded tannins and a high level of antioxidants — this wine is very good for your health.
Khikhvi (Dzhananura) is a rare autochthonous Georgian grape variety. First mentions of Khikhvi date back to 3-4 century AD. There are two Khikhvi subvarieties — Kakheti and Colchis, and the variety can be found only in two regions of Georgia: the Alazan valley and Colchis. However, even these Khikhvi subvarieties are dissimilar from each other.
Alaverdi Monastery Khikhvi is a refined and light wine, and this lightness is manifested in everything. The Alaverdi Khikhvi combines all the best qualities of European and Kakhetian white wines: the lightness, freshness, delicacy and fragrance of European wines, and the richness and diversity of Kakheti wines.
The wine has a golden tea colour, and a rich and harmonious bouquet with fruity notes in the aroma. The varietal characteristics are disclosed in the wine’s soft dried fruit sweetness and the balance in taste and aroma.
